The crew of the trawler Alaskan Mermaid, fishing in the icy waters of the Bering Straits, is hauling in a final load of Pollock before returning to port at Dutch Harbor on Amaknak Island in Unalaska. Suddenly, one of the crewmen spots something in the nets that shouldn’t be there. To the untrained eye it looks like a satellite dish but, when a helicopter is scrambled from nearby Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson with NASA scientist Sitara Khan on board, the stage is set for a deadly mystery that will affect the entire planet.
Sitara identifies the object as Voyager One, even though she knows that it sounds crazy – the space probe is currently over thirteen billion miles away having recently left the Solar System. The spacecraft is recovered and taken to a JPL laboratory at Pasadena for closer investigation, not least to discover how it could be in two places at the same time.
The authorities couldn’t have known that they would unwittingly unleash a horror upon humanity the likes of which has never been seen before, the vanguard to an alien invasion designed to wipe mankind from the face of the Earth.
A small band of culturally diverse men and women, forced together by circumstance, fights to survive and, in doing so, perhaps prevent the seemingly inevitable demise of the human race.
